"Listen," the defendant tells his lawyer, "If you can shorten
my sentence to three months I will give you a bonus of $2000."
The defendant indeed gets only three months in prison, so
pays his lawyer the bonus he promised him. Afterward the lawyer
tells his friend: "It was really hard to earn this money. Initially
the judge wanted to set the defendant free with a verdict of `not
guilty."'
